AT&T to launch shared data plans in late August, offer base price around $45 per smartphone: “

You can’t argue with a bit of competition.

Per AppleInsider, wireless carrier AT&T on Wednesday announced its new shared data plans, ranging from 1 gigabyte to 20 gigabytes of cap space, and starting at US$40 for 1 gigabyte of data plus an additional US$45 per smartphone.

The cost per gigabyte and smartphone decreases as customers add more data to their plan, so 4 gigabytes of data has a base price of US$70, plus US$40 per smartphone, all the way up to US$200 for 20 gigabytes of data per month and US$30 per smartphone.

Cellular capable tablet-style devices like Apple’s iPad are less expensive, and will cost US$10 per month to add to a shared data plan. Laptops and mobile hotspot devices are another US$20 each month, while basic and messaging phones can get shared data, unlimited talk and text for US$30 each month.

The new shared data plans allow customers to choose open of AT&T’s existing individual or family plans, and current customers are not required to switch to the new plans. Those who decide to switch to AT&T’s shared data plans can do so without a contract extension, and the rates are also available for business customers.

Customers can choose up to 10 devices to attach to their shared plan, and at least one of those devices must be a smartphone. The plans include tethering and unlimited domestic calls and texts for smartphones.

Competing U.S. carrier Verizon launched its own shared data plans on June 28, called ‘Share Everything.’ With it, line access for smartphones like Apple’s iPhone run US$40 per month, while tablets like the iPad are US$10 per month.

Stay tuned for additional details as they become available.

my cheapest iPhone 4 AT&T monthly service = $57.66

// March 7th, 2011 // No Comments » // Cheap iPhone Monthly Service, iPhone

This was with the cheapest data plan, using Textfree for as much texting as possible (with no texting plan just paying a per text fee that came directly to my phone.

And I had to turn off all of Settings > Notifications and only manually turn on the Notifications for the apps that I was most interested in updates from: TextFree and my banking app.

This was nice to finally get a bill that was this cheap but I also had at least 10+ dropped calls at my place of work (the signal is very weak there) so I am still considering switching to Verizon, just trying to decide whether to do it now, or switch when a possible iPhone 5 is released in June (but the big question is, if there is an iPhone 5 released in June will it immediately be available on AT&T AND Verizon simultaneously?

Is a New Texting Plan AT&Ts First Verizon iPhone Counteroffensive? [Unconfirmed]

Obviously using textfree is still cheaper and nearly as easy.

Is a New Texting Plan AT&T’s First Verizon iPhone Counteroffensive? [Unconfirmed]: “

According to this leaked photo over at Gear Live, AT&Ts going to be reworking its messaging plans next week. The $5/200 and $15/1500 texting plans will disappear, and in their place? A simplified system that beats Verizons messaging offering handily. More »

My Cheapest iPhone monthly AT&T service bill = $63.97 (total)

// November 29th, 2010 // No Comments » // Cheap iPhone Monthly Service

The least expensive bill for AT&T service for my iPhone 4 (since the first part of July when I got it) is $63.97  (this is for one individual there may be a cheaper way of doing it with a family plan)

To get this price I had to:

* pay for only 450 minutes of daytime calling, 5000 nights/weekends and unlimited mobile to mobile.  $39.99/month

* pay for only 200 MB of data (which basically means you RARELY use your 3G internet connection on your phone and ALWAYS update your APPS over WIFI and try to do as much surfing as possible over WIFI).   $15/month

* pay a per message charge for texting (for those of your friends/family that don’t know you use an additional free texting phone number):

regular text message= 20 cents

picture text message= 30 cents

This cost INCLUDES all the taxes and charges that are added on (Utah)

***Hopefully AT&T will get better service (I have had 4+ dropped calls standing outside in a parking lot near a fairly major city) and/or more options (a mid range data plan, now they have 200 MB or 2GB and nothing else) if/when Apple decides to use other carriers (hopefully January, 2011)

Text Messaging – Cheapest iPhone options

// September 27th, 2010 // No Comments » // Cheap iPhone Monthly Service

I have tried two free iPhone texting/text message apps:

TextNow – seemed to have more of a delay in sending the texts, and at least once they sent a garbled text, doesn’t let you have your own texting phone number (at least it didn’t when I tried it a few months ago (July 2010).

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textnow-unlimited-free-texting/id314716233?mt=8

and Textfree – sometimes their servers are overrun and you have to resend the text (it is saved) in a few minutes, no garbled texts, texts sent quickly, one ad right below where you click to start entering a text (which is probably the worst spot for it). These are my only complaints it is a great texting program. My online banking app refused to use my Textfree number to send account alerts to (it must have recognized that it was a text-only phone number?).

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/textfree-unlimited-send-text/id305925151?mt=8

I am using Textfree ONLY now (the least expensive texting plan with AT&T is $5/month for 200 texts) and just paying per message fees until I get my friends to text me on my Textfree phone number. So to equal the cost of the cheapest AT&T texting plan you could receive at least 24 plain texts/$4.80 and still save money.

AT&T per message fees for the iPhone (09/27/2010)

regular text message= 20 cents

Your mileage (cost) may vary.
